Thomas L. Hand, M.D.

Dr. Hand is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of acute and complex trauma patients, as well as post-traumatic deformity correction and reconstruction. He provides both operative and non-operative treatments of musculoskeletal injuries, and takes special interest in quickly returning patients back to their previous level of function following traumatic events.
Dr. Hand was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology (2009), Dr. Hand returned to San Antonio where he earned his Medical Degree (2014) and completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at UT Health San Antonio. During medical school, he was elected as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He was also given the Outstanding Resident of the Year award during training. After residency, he was chosen to stay for his fellowship in Orthopaedic Traumatology at UT Health. Dr. Hand was also able to complete an international traveling fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, under the renowned Dr. Hans-Christoph Pape (2017). After completing his training, Dr. Hand joined the UT Health faculty, where he also serves as the Fellowship Education Coordinator. He is actively involved in the treatment of upper and lower extremity trauma, to include pelvis and acetabulum, as well as training residents and fellows. His research interests include acute and post-traumatic reconstruction of the lower extremities. In his free time, Dr. Hand enjoys spending time with his family and working on the ranch in South Texas.
