Funding Agency Linking Interprofessional Networks for Collaboration (LINC) Seed Grants Program Title Linking Interprofessional Networks for Collaboration (LINC) Seed Grants Program: Head, Ears, Nose, Oral, and Throat Physical Exam Interprofessional Education Status Active Period 4/2019 - 4/2020 Role Principal Investigator Grant Detail Interprofessional education (IPE) engages learners in team-based care to educate and expose future providers to different professions with the goal of improving health outcomes and quality of care for patients. IPE is critical to the mission of UT Health San Antonio1 and therefore the larger UT System. As part of this initiative, our collaborative group aims to join the UT Health Long School of Medicine (LSOM) and the UT Health School of Dentistry (SOD) with the purpose of integrating the oral physical examination into the traditional head, ears, nose and throat (HENT) exam, and evaluate the effectiveness of IPE clinical simulation in this setting.
Students at the LSOM currently receive instruction on a basic HENT examination during their first year of medical school, lacking the oral examination and the integration of oral and systemic health. Conversely, dental students are rigorously educated and trained in the anatomy and physiology of the head and neck, though desire proficiency in a complete cranial nerve examination.
Our collaborative group is planning an activity that will course multiple days with first-year medical students and fourth-year dental students. Together they will share and gain knowledge in IPE, oral health and oral health?s correlation with systemic health. Approximately 260 students, 220 from the LSOM and 40 from the SOD, and 10 faculty facilitators from the LSOM will receive the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) Questionnaire pre-test and post-test to assess IPE competencies. Assessment of this activity will be used to build sustainable collaboration and education amongst healthcare providers at UT Health San Antonio. In the context of Internal Medicine (IM), "triage" refers to a constellation of activities related to determining the most appropriate disposition/management plans for patients. Triaging occurs across the care continuum and represents entrustable professional activities and skills across multiple ACGME domains that internists must master for patient safety and appropriate utilization of healthcare resources. Our project aims to provide IM residency programs a foundation to build their own triage curriculum based on their institutional needs, an e-module to train residents in inter-professional triage communication, and future modules to address systems-based practice and evidence-based clinical decision making.
