Research & Grants
My research is focused on interprofessional teams working together to create better practice for clinicians caring for patients living with dementia. Disease recognition and reasons to refer patients to oral healcare professionals is highlighted. I also continually research methods for teaching caregivers of people living with dementia skills to help them care for their loved-ones oral health.

Title: LINC Seed Grant: Developing an Interprofessional Objective Structured Exam (OSCE) for Health Literacy

Grant Detail: Pilot project designed to foster Interproffesional Collaboration (IPC) among dental hygiene, nursing, and occupational therapy students. Students were presented with identical health literacy information and participated in an Objective Structured clinical Examination (OSCE) in a simulated patient scenario to assess their knowledge of applying health literacy principles as a collaborative team.

Grant Detail: Dental hygiene, nursing, and occupational therapy students will learn from, with, and about each other’s respective disciplines by meeting IPECcompetencies for Teamwork, Communication and Roles and Responsibilities. This pilot program will include three (3) co-curricular IPE sessions over two (2) semesters: 1)introduction to dementia, Dementia Friends certification, IPE pre-test; 2) Virtual Reality(VR) simulation, IPE faculty mentor presentations on professional roles andresponsibilities within the healthcare system with IPE student group reflection; 3) IPEstudent group (video) presentations on assigned dementia case scenariosdemonstrating a team approach to case management.
