Marzieh Salehi, MD, MS, FACP
Professor of Medicine
Medical Director, Bartter Research Unit, Audie L. Murphy Hospital
Dr. Salehi is a board-certified endocrinologist with expertise as a clinician, translational investigator and educator in obesity, diabetes, and PCOS. She has been nationally recognized as a clinician expert in management of obesity and metabolic complications of weight loss surgery. Her research has been well funded for over the last 15 years by the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association and American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery focuses. She has also been significantly involved in mentorship of junior investigators.
The focus of Dr. Salehi’s research is glucose tolerance and pancreatic islet-cell function in patients with and without obesity or type 2 diabetes mediated by proglucagon-derived peptides (GLP-1 and glucagon).
Both GLP-1 and glucagon signals have been utilized for drug development to treat diabetes, obesity, and related complications. Using in vivo physiological studies in humans with and without obesity or type 2 diabetes, her lab investigates the interaction between ingested nutrient and hormonal and neural factors on glucose metabolism and energy balance.
The objective of this research is to gain insights into mechanisms underlying nutrient metabolism mediated by GLP-1 or glucagon, which in turn provide information in development of combined strategies utilizing surgical, medical and nutritional interventions to treat diabetes and obesity.
