Carol Nguyen is a tenured Associate Professor at UT Health San Antonio, School of Dentistry, Department of Periodontics, Division of Dental Hygiene. She received her Bachelor of Science 2000 and Master of Science in 2008 both from UT Health San Antonio. Her professional strengths are in teaching and service with a focus on advocating for public health programs using inter-professional collaborations. As oral healthcare professionals, we must understand how interventions and strategies effectively impact the determinants of health and the health outcomes of individuals, families, groups, and communities. Therefore, having the knowledge and ability to apply basic research principles to healthcare prevention programs is vital to support evidence-based clinical practice decisions. To that end, Ms. Nguyen’s field of study focused on analytical interpretation of public health prevention programs, oral health promotion, healthcare transition, and clinical care serving vulnerable and underserved populations.
Ms. Nguyen serves as a core faculty member and course director for undergraduate and graduate level courses in didactic and clinical formats. Her years of experience with teaching allowed her the opportunity to train independent, life-long learners in the delivery of oral health services in long-term care facilities. Ms. Nguyen serves as the Division Community Outreach Director and Director of the Bachelor Completion Program in Dental Hygiene. In 2016, she became certified to teach online by completing Quality Matters, QM Course. In 2023 she was certified in the QM Rubric update. During her tenure, she served as committee chair and committee member for several Master of Science students resulting in numerous peer-reviewed publications related to topics on oral health prevention, healthcare transition, and clinical care serving vulnerable and underserved populations.
