Rahma Mungia, B.D.S., M.S.c, D.D.P.H.R.C.S

Associate Professor

Director, South Texas Oral Health Network

Asst. Director, Southwest Region, National Dental PBRN

Dr. Rahma Mungia's professional journey started when she earned her Dental Degree from the KLE Institute, India, and practiced as a general dentist for two years. However, Dr. Mungia's concerns about public health issues in her country propelled her to pursue a master's degree in Dental Public Health from the University College London, United Kingdom (UK), and a diploma in Dental Public Health from the Royal College of Surgeons England in 2003. To strengthen her global public health commitment, she completed the Dental Public Health Residency at UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) in 2005. Currently, she serves as the Director for the South Texas Oral Health Network (STOHN), a community-engaged practice-based research network (PBRN) supported by the UTHSA, Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA), which prioritizes emphases on health in South Texas and our majority-minority Hispanic city, San Antonio. Dr. Mungia's work with STOHN was foundational in developing the Southwest Region (Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Kansas) of the National Dental PBRN, for which I serve as the Assistant Director, funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Dr. Mungia is a clinical research design expert and has developed, led, and/or coordinated 56 regional, national, international, and multi-site/center studies. Her research portfolio includes 64 publications ( 42 peer-reviewed; 22 non-peer-reviewed publications) in high-impact journals. She has presented 68 abstracts and posters at various local, national, and international conferences. In addition, she is experienced in research administration, project management, and grant writing. As a teacher, she has taught graduate and post-graduate level students and academics in disease prevention and health promotion, community-based participatory research, and research methodology, both in-person and online, and received positive evaluations from my students. She is committed to providing high-quality instruction to prepare students to become leaders in their professional fields. Furthermore, she is passionate about engaging in service activities within the University and the broader community. Dr. Mungia volunteered in various public health initiatives and is committed to promoting health equity in South Texas and beyond.
