John G. Kuhn, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCOP currently holds an endowed emeritus professorship with the University of Texas, College of Pharmacy in Austin, TX.
Pharmacology of anticancer/biological agents has been the focus of Dr. Kuhn’s research over the last thirty plus years. Dr. Kuhn served as the Director of Pharmacology, Institute for Drug Development at the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio, Texas from 1993 to 1997. He was the Director of Pharmacology Core for the North American Brain Tumor Consortium from 1995 to 2008 as well as the San Antonio Cancer Center from 1991 to 2004. Agents for which Dr. Kuhn has had an integral part in their development include ondansetron, fludarabine, paclitaxel, mitoxantrone, docetaxel, topotecan, irinotecan and pemetrexed. Dr. Kuhn co-authored the initial model consent form for anticancer agents published in the Federal Register which was used by the major cooperative oncology groups and the NCI. Dr. Kuhn is also a co-holder of a US patent for an intramedullary catheter device. Dr. Kuhn has authored or co-authored over 400 peer reviewed publications, abstracts and book chapters. Dr. Kuhn has been the acting editor, co-editor and special editor for the journal of Investigational New Drugs (IND): The Journal of New Anticancer Agents.
Dr. Kuhn is the recipient of a wide-ranging array of awards and honors, including the Merck Sharp & Dome Award for outstanding achievement in the profession of pharmacy, the Education Award from the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, the Guttman’s Distinguished Lecture Award from the University of Kentucky, College of Pharmacy and the Bertha Bouroncle Distinguished Lecture Award, Ohio State University. Dr. Kuhn is the recipient of the 2007 ASHP Foundation Award for sustained contributions to the literature. He is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and Board Certified in Oncology Pharmacy. In 2008, the UT Board of Regents appointed Dr. Kuhn as a member of the UT Cancer Clinical Trials Working Group for a Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) proposal. Dr. Kuhn received the William J. Sheffield Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 2010.
He received his BS degree in pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin and earned his doctor of pharmacy degree through a joint program of the University of Texas College of Pharmacy and UT Health San Antonio. Dr. Kuhn went on to complete his residency in Pediatric and Adult Oncology at the Health Science Center and subsequently took a position as Assistant Professor at the University Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi.
Dr. Kuhn has been a member of several professional and scientific organizations including the, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Association of Cancer Research (AACR), Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA- serving as President/Past President 2004-2006), and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP, member of the Board of Regents of ACCP, 2005-2008).
