Edward R Kost, MD
Professor, Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Director
Dr. Edward Kost received his baccalaureate in biochemistry and cell biology from the University of California at San Diego, and his medical degree from the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. Following residency training at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, he completed both a research and a clinical fellowship in gynecology-oncology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.
Dr. Kost retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Air Forced after 25 years of service. He is a decorated combat physician who was deployed to Balad Air Base in Iraq. While on active duty, he served as the Chief of the Medical Staff at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Consultant to the Surgeon General for Gynecologic Oncology, and ultimately the Chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Brooke Army Medical Center. He has received numerous military honors including the lifetime achievement award, the Legion of Merit medal.
Dr. Kost has worked in the UT Medicine Obstetrics and Gynecology Department for the past 16 years. He is a nationally recognized expert in Woman’s Cancers. He is responsible for bringing robotic surgery to UT Medicine in 2011 and has performed over 1,000 robotic cases. He is a strong advocate for minimally invasive robotic cancer surgery. He is a pioneer in the study of Gynecologic Cancers in South Texas Latina women. He has published over 200 abstracts and research articles, with an emphasis on health care disparities in Women’s Cancer. He is a Principle Investigator at the Mays Cancer Center and serves as a subject matter expert on several large NIH R01 grants. He currently serves on the Western Association of Gynecologic Oncology executive board and the Society of Gynecologic Oncology Program Directors Committee. Dr. Kost is the founder of the UT Medicine Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship program and is the current program director. He is certified by The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in obstetrics and gynecology and gynecologic oncology.
