Bertha E. Flores, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC

Associate Professor/Research

Dr. Flores is a Hispanic, bilingual/bi-cultural Associate Professor with Tenure at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA), School of Nursing (SON). She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. As a practicing Women’s Healthcare Nurse Practitioner, she has acquired a unique perspective of the needs of women. She earned a PhD in Nursing, Women’s and Gender studies and Geriatric portfolios from the University of Texas at Austin. She received the Outstanding Graduate Award from UT Austin, School of Nursing. In 2018, she obtained a graduate Certificate in Cancer Prevention, from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Her nursing career expands from clinical nursing at the bedside and outpatient care of women, to academic and faculty roles. Dr. Flores is Director of the Certificate in Translational Science Program and Master of Science in Clinical Investigation and Translational Science (MSCI-TS) Faculty member. She has mentored students in clinical and didactic undergraduate and graduate nursing programs as well as international, high school, translational science, and medical students. Her leadership in education lead to the development and introduction of veteran simulation content in the maternal-child undergraduate nursing curriculum. Her passion and commitment in the field of health disparities has identified the importance of cultural literacy, the use of code-switching in health communication. She has received numerous awards including the John A. Hartford Foundation Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) and the KL2 Scholar award supported through a Clinical and Translational Science (CTSA) award. Her experiences have highlighted the importance in how education is fundamental in bridging health disparities among vulnerable polulations.
