John Cunningham, MD, FHM, FACP
Associate Professor/Clinical
Dr. John Cunningham is a published, board-certified Hospitalist who joined UT Health San Antonio as an Associate Professor/Clinical in September 2023. Dr. Cunningham earned his Bachelor of Art in Behavioral Neuroscience with a minor in Chemistry (graduating Magna Cum Laude) at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN in 2004 before going on to earn his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in Minneapolis, MN in 2009. He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, CO in 2012 before becoming a Hospitalist and instructor at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine.
Dr. Cunningham is a member of several professional organizations including the American College of Physicians, Society of Hospital Medicine, Society of General Internal Medicine, Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Society of Bedside Medicine. He became a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in March of 2022 and, later, a Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine in October 2022; he also serves on the Society of General Internal Medicine's Medical Educators Interest Group.
Dr. Cunningham is the recipient of the Inpatient Teaching Award: Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (2016), a "Top Doc" award for Internal Medicine (2017), Outstanding Teacher for Denver Health LIC (2022), the Education Excellence Award for Denver Health (2022) and UT Health Division of Hospital Medicine's "Researcher of the Year Award" (2023), nominated by his peers as a faculty member with demonstrated commitment to the research mission, including scholarship in quality and improvement, medical education-based research and clinical research.
