Keith Sumner, M.D. is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesiology at UT Health San Antonio.
Dr. Sumner graduated from Kansas State University in 1984 with summa cum laude honors. He completed his M.D. at UTHSCSA in 1988 wtih AOA honors. Dr. Sumner began his general surgery internship and residency at the Bexar County Hospital iin San Antonio, transitioning into the Bexar County Hospital Anesthesia residency and graduating from Anesthesia residency in 1993. He began his private anesthesia practice that year at Community Hospital in San Angelo, TX where his practice was composed of the following case mixture: neurosurgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, orthopedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology surgery, uroligan surgery, pediatric surgery, cleft lip and palate specialty surgery, dental procedures and obstetrics. He became board certified in anesthesia while in San Angelo and also began a family. His second child was born in 1996 at the Univiversity Hospital in San Antonio and was diagnosed with Down Syndrome and Duodenal Atresia. On day-of-life #1, his son underwent surgical correction of his Duodenal Atresia, also at University Hospital in San Antonio. Dr. Sumner moved his private anesthesia practice to San Antonio in 1999 based on the advice of his disabled child's state caseworker who felt his son was in need of more advanced services than San Angelo could provide. He started working with STAR Anesthesia in 1999. In 2019 STAR Anesthesia partners sold their practice to U.S. Anesthesia Partners. He worked with U.S. Anesthesia Partners until 2022 at which time Dr. Sumner transitioned his practice to UTHSCSA, University Hospital, where he is currentlys erving as a Clinical Associate Professor of Anesthesiology.
