Dr. Hicks has served in a variety of roles for the Dental School. He has been: Interim Associate Dean for Advanced Education, predoctoral laboratory and clinical faculty, postdoctoral didactic and clinical faculty, and Director of both the Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry and the Advanced Education in General Practice Residency programs. He has also served as Chair of the Department of Hospital Dentistry in University Hospital, San Antonio. As Director of the Postdoctoral General Dentistry Division and of both the Advanced General Dentistry clinic at the Dental School and of the Hospital Dentistry Clinic at University Hospital, he expanded clinic physical footprints, created new clinical care opportunities, managed clinics, budgets and a cadre of over 40 faculty and associated personnel. During his time of fiscal responsibility for the residency clinics, revenue increased 100% to 400% in each year as compared to the year previous to his leadership. Dr. Hicks also has been elected Chair of the Commission on Dental Accreditation, Executive Board member of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry, member of the Legislative Advisory Committee and Policy and Research Advisory Committee of the American Dental Ediucation Association and member of the American Dental Association's Council on Scientific Affairs. He posesses a Board in Special Care Dentistry and Fellowships from: the American Association of Hospital Dentists, National Academies of Practice and the American Dental Education's Leadership Institute.  Dr. Hicks lately has concentrated on obtaining federal training grants. To date, he has secured over $35 million in state and federal funds.
