Matthew Wicklund, MD, FAAN

Professor

Matthew P. Wicklund, MD, FAAN, is currently professor of neurology at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA). His main areas of research interests include genetic and acquired muscle disorders.  

Wicklund is a graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Psychology. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Colorado, Denver.  He completed his internal medicine internship at Dartmouth, his neurology residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in the United States Air Force, and his neuromuscular fellowship at The Ohio State University. He has obtained board subspecialty certification in neuromuscular medicine and clinical neuromuscular pathology. 

Wicklund serves as director for the UT Health San Antonio MDA Multidisciplinary Care Center.  He is a member of the Limb Girdle, Facioscapulohumeral and Myotonic Dystrophy Clinical Research Networks, and the Neuromuscular Study Group. He has participated in over 35 multi-center clinical trials in the areas of muscular dystrophy, ALS, and myasthenia gravis; and he has over 200 published articles, chapters and abstracts, and invited lectures at national meetings.  Wicklund has previously served in the capacities of neurology residency program director, neuromuscular genetic counselor fellowship director, consultant to the Surgeon General of the Unites States Air Force, and chairman of neurology at Wilford Hall Medical Center.
