Associate Professor/Clinical

I am an experienced, bilingual, doctorate prepared, double ANCC board-certified Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist serving as an Associate Professor/Clinical at the University of Texas San Antonio School of Nursing, offering expertise in the didactic delivery of diagnosis and management of psychiatric patients across the life span and supervision during clinical involvement. I utilize immersive, innovative, and individualized teaching approaches to meet the students' diverse learning styles and individual needs, adapting to synchronous and asynchronous learning class settings. My areas of expertise include education and clinical practice, which includes assessment, diagnosis, and management of complex psychiatric disorders across the lifespan, individual and group psychotherapy, and psychiatric medication management. My commitment has been to provide world-class behavioral health care to the community throughout my four decades of combined military and civilian career. Serving two consecutive combat zone tours to Iraq and one to Afghanistan, my expertise is in trauma-focused care in inpatient and outpatient settings. As faculty and clinician, I provide supervision and consultation to undergraduate and graduate students, education to participants in community-based events, and mental health care to UT Health students, staff, foster population, and community members through practice partnerships and preceptorship to PMHNP students. Collaboratively with all five schools at UT Health (medical, pharmacy, dental, school of health professions, and nursing), I contribute to developing educational and experiential interprofessional activities for faculty and students. I authored peer-reviewed articles, a virtual blog, a poster, podium presentations, and a chapter review. I have been widely recognized locally and nationally. I served as chair, champion, and mentor to many DNP students and as part of the DNP working group, I helped align the new ANCC nursing essentials with the SON DNP curriculum. In preparation for their residency training program Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation application, I am a consultant to the Advisory / Governance Committee for South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) and UT Health Science Center (UT Health) Nurse Practitioner Residency (NPR) programs. I am an excellent mentor and teacher who, in collaboration with the behavioral health faculty, successfully prepared the PMHNP students to obtain a 100% first-time pass rate of the rigorous PMHNP ANCC board certification exam in the past four years!
