Joel Tsevat, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Tsevat is a general internist and outcomes researcher. He is Professor of Medicine and Joaquin G. Cigarroa, Jr., MD, Distinguished Chair; Director, Center for Research to Advance Community Health (ReACH); and PI, Institutional Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) KL2 program. He holds a joint appointment at Dell Medical School, where he is a professor in the Departments of Population Health and Internal Medicine.
Dr. Tsevat is a graduate of UT Austin (BA in Plan II) and of the Long School of Medicine (MD), from which he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award. He received an MPH degree from the T.H. Chan Harvard School of Public Health and completed a fellowship in Clinical Decision Making at Tufts Medical Center. He was on faculty at Harvard, then moved to Cincinnati where he spent 22 years in roles ranging from Director of Outcomes Research to Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and in various roles at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center and VA Central Office. He relocated to Texas in 2017.
A past-president of the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM), he is recognized internationally in health-related quality of life research, in particular health status vs. utility assessment; cost-effectiveness analysis; decision analysis; and spirituality/religion research. He has published over 175 peer-reviewed papers, reviews, book chapters, and editorials. He has served as PI on multiple federally-funded grants from NIH, VA, and AHRQ. He is currently multi-PI on an AHRQ grant in which patient-reported outcomes will be incorporated into a predictive analytic tool to support shared decision making in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. He has a long track record of mentoring trainees and junior faculty and won an award for a short course on mentoring from SMDM. He recently completed a 3-year term on the CTSA Steering Committee at NCATS and serves on the external advisory boards for 6 CTSA hubs. The ReACH Center brings together community partners and professionals from diverse disciplines to advance population health through research that improves health outcomes, addresses health inequities, promotes sustainability, acknowledges context, and respects culture.
