Azizeh K. Sowan is a tenured Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio School of Nursing. She holds a Master’s in Data Management and Analytics, a Master’s in Business Administration, a Master’s in Nursing Education, and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Sowan is recognized nationally as an expert and consultant in nursing informatics and patient care technology. She has served as an informatics consultant for numerous healthcare systems, professional associations, and IT vendors. For more than a decade, she has also served as an informatics and research consultant for a Magnet-designated, Level-1 trauma medical center in San Antonio, where she applied her expertise to enhance clinical systems and improve patient safety.

Her research focuses on systems usability and on identifying and eliminating technology-related hazards within complex adaptive healthcare systems to advance quality and safety. Leveraging large datasets and log data from medical devices, Dr. Sowan has published extensively on technology hazards and national patient safety goals, earned multiple research grants, and received numerous awards for her publications and research projects.

For over 25 years, Dr. Sowan has taught a wide array of undergraduate and graduate nursing courses, including informatics, nursing theory, statistical methods, leadership, research, policy, and quality improvement. She has mentored countless students in master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, and capstone projects, shaping the next generation of nursing leaders and innovators.
