Dr. Soni is a professor of medicine and academic hospitalist at the University of Texas School of Medicine in San Antonio and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. He is trained in internal medicine and is an internationally recognized leader in point-of-care ultrasound. Dr. Soni has collaborated with a broad range of healthcare professionals to develop training curricula in point-of-care ultrasound for different specialties, and he is well known for teaching point-of-care ultrasound nationally and internationally. He currently leads development of a national point-of-care ultrasound training program for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and serves as the director of the VA Point-of-Care Ultrasound Patient Safety Center.
His current scholarly work includes evaluating the impact of incorporating point-of-care ultrasound use into clinical care, and in 2016, he was awarded a VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) grant to evaluate the implementation of point-of-care ultrasound use in the VA healthcare system. He is the visionary and chief editor of the book, Point-of-Care Ultrasound, that was awarded the 2015 British Medical Association’s President’s Choice Award. He has led the establishment of a point-of-care ultrasound certifcate training program offered by the Society of Hospital Medicine and American College of Chest Physicians since 2016, and he continues to be actively involved in point-of-care ultrasound national organizations. Dr. Soni is also the recipient of the Division of Hospital Medicine's "Researcher of the Year Award" (2022) for his commitment to the research mission, including scholarship in quality improvement, medical education-based research, and clinical research. In April of 2025, Dr. Soni received the Society of Hospital Medicine's "Award for Outstanding Service in Medicine".
For his contribution to education, Dr. Soni was recognized by the Internal Medicine Clerkship as an "Outstanding Faculty Educator of Medicine Clerkship" for the 2024-2025 academic year.
