Dr. Carolina Solis-Herrera is an Associate Professor of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, Founding Director of the Center for Excellence in Diabetes, and the Ed and Linda Whitacre Distinguished Endowed University Chair for Endocrinology, Diabetes Care and Research. She previously served as Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Medical Director of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinics. She completed her medical training in Mexico, followed by advanced research and clinical fellowships in Diabetes, Metabolism, and Endocrinology at UT Health San Antonio. She joined the faculty in 2017 and was appointed Founding Director of the Center for Excellence in Diabetes in 2025.

A nationally recognized physician–scientist, Dr. Solis-Herrera has received numerous honors, including the Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award, the UT System Rising Star Award, and the UTHSA Presidential Clinical Excellence Award, and has been repeatedly named among San Antonio’s Best Doctors. She leads multiple investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials and has secured significant intramural and extramural research funding.

Dr. Solis-Herrera has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and is known for her work in diabetes therapeutics, cardiometabolic endocrinology, obesity, fatty liver disease, and the mechanisms of SGLT2 inhibitors. Her ongoing research includes guideline-shaping studies in prediabetes and diabetes in kidney transplant recipients.

Deeply committed to education and community outreach, she is dedicated to advancing innovative treatments for diabetes and obesity and to training the next generation of physicians and scientists.
