Darren C Samples, MD

Darren C. Samples is a clinical professor of Anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology
at UT Health San Antonio. He received his medical doctorate from Texas A&M Health Science
Center College of Medicine in Bryan-College Station, Texas. He continued on to complete both
his residency in Anesthesiology and fellowship in Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at the
University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.
Dr. Samples double board certified in Anesthesiology and Adult Cardiac Anesthesiology by the
American Board of Anesthesiology. He also obtained his certification in Advanced
Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography from the National Board of Echocardiography.
After completion of his training, Dr. Samples worked in private practice in the cardiac ORs of
Methodist hospital before joining the department here at UT Health San Antonio. He left for a
year to help start a residency program with Baylor Scott & White in Fort Worth, Texas and has
now returned to this department in San Antonio. While having a primary interest in cardiac,
thoracic and vascular anesthesiology, as well as perioperative TEE, TTE and point of care
ultrasound, he also has a special interest in resident training and education.

Highlights
Upon joining the department in 2022, Dr. Samples jumped directly into guiding and advancing resident and trainee education and learning. While taking part in the resident lecture series, he joined in the POCUS curriculum team, helping to add to its extensive list of lectures and practical material while taking the role of leading the POCUS teaching committee in 2023-2024.
He also served on the University Hospital Resuscitation Committee from 2023-2024 and revised the code blue policy to better include the role of the anesthesia department in this vital protocol. Finally, in his first year as faculty he pioneered and implemented the first mock objective structured clinical exam (mOSCE) to help better prepare the graduating anesthesia residents for their final board examinations. This has become an annual workshop that has seen great success and received excellent praise from both residents and faculty.Appointments
