Currently seeking Ph.D. students

Afaf Saliba, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, and the Center for Precision Medicine at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Dr. Saliba’s research program investigates how inflammatory diseases and chronic low-grade systemic inflammation affect brain health, with a particular focus on the brain vasculature, neuroinflammation, and premature brain aging. Her work examines the immune and metabolic mechanisms connecting kidney disease and other systemic conditions to cerebrovascular dysfunction and cognitive decline. Her laboratory combines experimental disease models, molecular biology, and spatial multi-omics with clinical and translational studies to connect mechanistic discoveries to human disease and identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets that preserve vascular and brain health.

An NIH-supported K12 scholar, Dr. Saliba is committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and mentoring the next generation of scientists.
