Dr. John D. Rugh is Professor and Director of the Evidence Based Practice Program at Univ of Texas HSC School of Dentistry at San Antonio. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara and completed four years of postdoctoral training at Claremont Graduate School before joining the faculty at San Antonio in 1977. He founded and served as Director of the Dental School’s Facial Pain Clinic (1978-2003). In 1985, he initiated San Antonio’s Student Research Program through a National Institutes of Health Training Grant. He also served as Director of Research for the Dental School (1991–97) and Chair of the Department of Orthodontics (1996-2010).
Dr. Rugh’s research accomplishments include 35+ years of NIH support as PI or co-PI on R03, R01, T35, P50, P20 and R25 research and/or training programs. He has published in the areas of facial pain, sleep bruxism, orthognathic surgery, oral function and aging. Dr. Rugh recently completed a four-year NIH R25 Education Research Grant to support the development and assessment of the school’s Evidence-Based Practice Program and is working with colleagues in Medicine on a Sleep Discorded Breathing Program. His current focus is related to Translation and Dissemination of Science. He has edited 4 books, 17 book chapters, 130 scientific articles and over 200 research abstracts.
Nationally, Dr. Rugh served as President of the American Association for Dental Research (1994–95) and served a four-year term on the Scientific Advisory Council of the National Institute for Dental Research. In 2002, he was the recipient of a Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Association for Dental Research. In 2007, he was awarded Honorary Fellowship in the American College of Dentists. In 2012 Dr. Rugh received The University of Texas Academy of Health Science Education, First Place Award for “Innovations in Health Science Education”. In 2016 he received the Evidence-Based Dentistry Faculty Award for accomplished faculty members from the American Dental Association and the American Association of Dental Research.
