Dr. Julie K. Peterson, PhD, MSN, RN, CHSE, is an Assistant Professor with a rich background in adult education and simulation in healthcare. After having started her career as a registered nurse in 2003, she earned her MSN in Nursing Education from the University of Texas at El Paso and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington. She joined the faculty at UT Health San Antonio in the fall of 2014. Dr. Peterson holds multiple certifications including the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) and the Quality Matters (QM) Teaching Online Certificate (TOC). Her approach emphasizes the creation of an engaging and reflective learning environment—one that not only conveys essential knowledge but also inspires enthusiasm, critical thinking, and a sustained commitment to lifelong learning. She integrates students’ lived experiences and diverse perspectives into the learning process, viewing them as essential to preparing nurses to deliver culturally competent care in vulnerable populations. Dr. Peterson’s impact extends to designing and leading the integration of Dementia-Informed Nursing Care across the Curriculum. This effort aims to improve learning outcomes and better prepare nurses to care for clients with chronic conditions.
