Prince Otchere, MD

Born and raised in Ghana, Dr.  Prince Otchere moved to Houston, Texas for tertiary education. His awareness of high blood pressure in his family and the discovery that some cardiovascular diseases are more prevalent in certain ethnic minorities inspired his decision to pursue a degree in Molecular Genetic Technology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, School of Health professions in Houston. Dr. Otchere developed a keen interest in personalized medicine and the intersection between Molecular Genetics, Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease under mentors such as Professor Peter Hu. His graduation project, “Resequencing DIP2C Gene in Leukemia and Breast Cancer Patients” won 1st place poster at the annual MD Anderson Undergraduate Award for Research.

After working for a year in a molecular technology lab, he moved to California and completed his medical education at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Subsequently, he completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Kettering Medical Center in Ohio. Through the mentorship of Dr. Carl Busch, he decided to pursue Cardiology with a focus in Cardio-Oncology. Dr. Otchere’ s experiences and training have developed into his strong commitment to provide compassionate cardiovascular care to cancer patients who are about to undergo cardiotoxic therapy with radiation and chemotherapy. He seeks to provide optimal care for survivors after cancer therapy as they have a higher risk of heart disease compared to the general public.

Dr. Otchere is board-certified in Cardio-Oncology-ICOS, Echocardiography, Nuclear Cardiology and Internal Medicine. He is a contributing author to the first Cardio-Oncology examination review book. He completed Epidemiology program from the Harvard University School of Public Health. Together with Harvard mentors, he was working on creating cardiac risk prediction tools to help oncologists anticipate patients who are most at risk of developing Cardiotoxity. Dr. Otchere is here to help direct the Cardio-Oncology program at the UT Health San Antonio and Mays Cancer Center. He is providing general cardiology consultation as well.

As for his public health interest, Dr. Otchere is passionate about understanding the intersection of the immigration process and access to care and the potential impact on recent immigrants as it pertains to Cardio-Metabolic Health. He founded, Total Health, a preventive clinic that provides free medical care to immigrants in Cincinnati, OH.
