Patrick Nguyen, M.D.
Interim Division Chief, Division of General and Minimally Invasive Surgery
Medical Student Clerkship Director
Dr. Nguyen graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BA in Microbiology in 2000. He completed his M.D. at the Long School of Medicine in San Antonio in 2004 and five years of General Surgery Training in June 2009 at UT Health San Antonio. During training Dr. Nguyen was recognized for outstanding teaching as recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Medical Students Award (2008, 2009) and the Outstanding Resident Teaching Award (2008). He joined the UT Health Long School of Medicine faculty after his training and for thirteen years he practiced General Surgery at UT Health Westover Hills and Christus Santa Rosa Westover Hills. Today he maintains a general surgery practice at University Hospital, Christus Santa Rosa Medical Center Hospital, and his outpatient clinics at the UT Health MARC and University Health System Clinics. He has been recognized as a Texas Rising Star (2012, 2013, 2014), San Antonio Top Doctors (2010), San Antonio Best Doctors (2016, 2020), and San Antonio Top Surgeons (2023). He has held numerous hospital leadership roles including three 2-year terms as Chair of Surgical Services followed by two 2-year terms as Section Chief of General Surgery at Christus Santa Rosa Westover Hills. He has served as Surgery Clerkship Director since 2014 and is actively involved in curricular development, teaching students and residents, and educational leadership in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Nguyen has received numerous teaching awards since joining the faculty to include the Department of Surgery Excellence in Teaching Medical Students Award (2010), the Medical Student Class of 2017 Favorite Surgery Faculty, Medical Student Class of 2019 Favorite Clerkship Award, and in 2021 was recognized by the Dean as a Distinguished Teaching Professor for his contributions as a Founding Member of the Academy of Educational Scholars. Dr. Nguyen was named Interim Division Chief of the Division of General and Minimally Invasive Surgery in September 2023 and he serves as the Chief of the American College of Surgery Mastery in General Surgery Program in the Department of Surgery. When not working he can be found spending time with his wife and two daughters, biking, hiking, playing tennis, working out, and enjoying all that San Antonio has to offer. Dr. Nguyen is fluent in French, Vietnamese, and some Spanish.
