Dr. Nelson joined the UT Health Science Center-San Antonio faculty in July 2005. Dr. Nelson is certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and serves as a board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. From 2012-2017, she served as the medical school’s AOA councilor.
Dr. Nelson currently serves as the Division Director and Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
She is a graduate of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Academic Scholars and Leaders Program, has received numerous teaching awards including the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) National Excellence in Teaching Award (2011 and 2019) and the 2022 UT Presidential Award in the category of Teaching Excellence-Sustained. She was named a distinguished teaching professor by the UT System in 2021 and is an inaugural Member and Foundational Board of Directors Member of the Long School of Medicine Academy of Teaching Scholars.
Dr. Nelson is also the director of colposcopy services and the University Health Robert B. Green Dysplasia clinic since 2011. She has served on multiple American Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) national committees and is currently on their Board of Directors.
Her special interests are medical education, curriculum development and cervical dysplasia.
