Joseph Murgo, MD, MMM, FACC, FAHA
Clinical Professor
Dr. Murgo is a proud graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He interned at Northwestern University Medical Center in Chicago and then entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps to pursue his training in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He was director of the cardiac catheterization laboratories and became training program director and section head of cardiology there until he retired as a Colonel, U.S. Army Medical Corps. He also served as the cardiology consultant to the Army Surgeon General. Dr. Murgo has published many scientific studies, some of which became classics in human cardiac and arterial dynamics and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
After his military career, he was the Training Program Director and Chief of Cardiology at the Ochsner Clinic and later at Tulane University Health Science Center in New Orleans. He returned to San Antonio and spent the past 17 years at UTHSCSA to include 8 years as a Staff Cardiologist at Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital. Recently, he spent an additional 3 years as the Lead Cardiologist for the VA's new Clinical Resource Hub "tele cardiology" program for veterans living in rural areas of the state.
He has extensive clinical experience in cardiovascular diseases with a special interest in heart failure, valvular heart disease, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He is a Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) and Director of the HCM Center of Excellence at UTHSCSA.
