Charles W Mathias, PhD
Professor, tenured
Dr. Mathias is a tenured Professor and the Director of Impact and Innovation at UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing. His mentoring and instruction enrich the pipeline of students and faculty contributing to the human health research enterprise. A productive researcher, he has influenced the science of how impulsivity is measured and interpreted. He has advanced the understanding of impulsivity as an underlying mechanism in physical aggression, suicide attempts, and substance use. Because these behaviors frequently can result in contact with emergency care and law enforcement systems, this scholarship transitioned from studying individual risk to focusing on how interactions with safety-net systems impact health outcomes. He is applying skills learned as a US Senate health policy staffer to educate decision-makers on policy solutions for people experiencing mental illness and/or substance use.
