Sara Suzanne Masoud, PhD, MPH

Assistant Professor

Dr. Sara S. Masoud is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio whose work advances translational and engagement sciences in dementia and brain health research. Trained in public health and translational science, she develops and evaluates community-engaged approaches that strengthen the relevance, rigor, and uptake of research among underrepresented populations.

Dr. Masoud has led multiple funded participatory studies with Latino and Arab American communities in South and Central Texas. She partners with Community Councils for Dementia Research to co-conduct engagement programs (demencia pláticas, ملتقى الذاكرة) and leads studies to improve exclusionary research practices. Her mixed-methods research examines caregiver experiences, community-defined dementia research priorities, and the processes that support meaningful involvement in research. She has also led the participatory development of multiple Project ECHO® programs in brain health for community health workers and primary care providers.

Dr. Masoud has served as Principal Investigator, Site PI, and Co-investigator on several projects and studies. Her work has been funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, the Alzheimer’s Association, Methodist Healthcare Ministries, and the Michigan Center for Contextual Factors in Alzheimer’s Disease, among other intramural and extramural mechanisms. She is currently a K12 Scholar with the Institute for the Integration of Medicine and Science and is recognized as an Aspen Institute Community Health Fellow. She publishes and presents widely in aging, nursing, and engagement science. When teaching, she instructs graduate level courses in qualitative and mixed-methods.
