Soumya Maity, PhD

Assistant professor /Research

Dr. Maity is an Assistant Professor at the Center for Precision Medicine (CPM), Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, The University of Texas at San Antonio. His research is dedicated to advancing the understanding of molecular mechanisms driving kidney dysfunction in acute kidney injury (AKI), diabetic kidney disease (DKD), and age-associated chronic kidney disease (CKD).

He utilizes multi-modal spatial imaging approaches, including spatial metabolomics, spatial transcriptomics, and spatial proteomics (CODEX and COMET), and integrates spatial metabolomics with single-cell transcriptomics to uncover the cellular and molecular drivers of kidney dysfunction across diverse kidney disorders.

Through cross-species analyses, Dr. Maity is investigating how mitochondrial metabolism contributes to kidney dysfunction. His work has revealed dysregulated intracellular homeostasis of TCA cycle metabolites associated with CKD progression, as well as adenine as a metabolic inducer of renal senescence in aging kidneys. His ongoing research seeks to restore physiological balance of TCA metabolites and adenine to ameliorate CKD in both diabetes and aging.
