Kimberly N. Hughes, DNP, RNC-OB, CNS

Associate Professor/Clinical

Dr. Kimberly Hughes is an Associate Professor/Clinical and Director of Prelicensure Programs at the UT San Antonio School of Nursing. As a nationally certified perinatal clinical nurse specialist in inpatient obstetric care, she offers extensive expertise in maternal health spanning from conception through the early postpartum period.

Dr. Hughes serves as the course coordinator and lead instructor for Care of the Childbearing Family (N3207) in both the traditional and the accelerated nursing tracks. She also instructs undergraduate students in both clinical and community maternity care settings with the Care of the Childbearing Family clinical course (N3208). She is skilled in simulation and experiential learning and is one of the faculty members who lead the OB simulation for undergraduate students. At the graduate level, she mentors students through their doctoral projects in the DNP project courses (N7305, N7309 and (N7307). 

Dr. Hughes educational pursuits extend beyond academia into the community. She volunteers time teaching fetal monitoring to OB nurses in surrounding community hospitals, but her community work primarily focuses on improving breastfeeding practices and safe sleep initiatives. Her work in improving maternal/newborn care practices along with strategies to better engage students in learning has been published in peer-reviewed nursing journals. Dr. Hughes is a committed member of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) and has served at the local and national level. She has been a reviewer for Nursing for Women’s Health since 2017 and is a former member of the AWHONN National Research and Advisory Committee, and a current member of the AWHONN Evidenced-Based Practice committee.
