Kenneth M. Hargreaves, DDS, PhD, currently serves as a professor of endodontics, director of the Craniofacial Oral-Biology Student Training in Academic Research (COSTAR) T32 training program, and the inaugural director of the School of Dentistry’s Center for Pain Therapeutics and Addiction Research. The center is a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to revolutionizing pain management and reducing opioid dependency. He also holds cross appointments as professor in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine’s departments of pharmacology, physiology and surgery. He has been a UT Health San Antonio faculty member since 1997.
Previously chair of the Department of Endodontics for 26 years, Dr. Hargreaves has helped shape the School of Dentistry’s national reputation for excellence, leading research projects that have secured more than $139 million in federal and foundation funding before stepping down to concentrate on research, student instruction and mentorship activities.
His many accolades include the American Dental Association Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research, the American Association of Endodontists President’s Award, the International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Awards, a prestigious Hill Prize and the Outstanding Research Accomplishment Award from the Military Health System Research Symposium.
An internationally recognized scholar and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Endodontics, Dr. Hargreaves has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and is co-author of the definitive authority on endodontics, Cohen’s Pathway to the Pulp. Additionally, he developed the “Hargreaves test,” now a standard test in preclinical pain research around the world, while he was a senior staff fellow at the National Institutes of Health. To date, it has been cited in about 5,900 publications.
Based on citation metrics compiled by Stanford University, Dr. Hargreaves has ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists, a distinction he has held since 1979.
Dr. Hargreaves received his BA (’77) in neurobiology from the University of California at Berkeley, his DDS (’83) from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and his PhD (’86) in physiology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his residency in endodontics at the University of Minnesota in 1993 and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics
