Funding Agency University of Texas Healthcare Safety and Effectiveness Grant Program Title The University of Texas Patient Safety Medical Education Grant Award Status Complete Period 8/2015 - 7/2016 Role Co-Investigator Grant Detail I was co-investigator in this UT funded grant, with Dr. Sisson, Ultrasound Director, and also faculty from the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology. We dissected and plastinated individual cadaveric hearts as well as a cadaveric thoracic block dissection that included the heart in its anatomical location. After plastination we prepared these models by cutting the individual hearts along representative echocardiographic planes and cutting a window into the thoracic model to show the spatial relationship of the heart to surrounding anatomic structures. These models were then used as part of an educational research study to determine their impact on first year medical student understanding of echocardiographic anatomy and imaging planes during the cardiac portion of their longitudinal ultrasound curriculum. Results were presented as an oral research presentation at the Word Congress on Ultrasound in Medical Education.
Funding Agency Title Effect of Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation on IVC Collapsibility as Measured by Bedside Ultrasound Status Active Period - Present Role Co-Investigator Grant Detail IRB# HSC20140271H This research project seeks to determine the effect that non-invasive positive pressure ventilation has on the inferior vena cava as measured by bedside ultrasound. To do this normal volunteers are consented and exposed to variable levels of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation and their inferior vena cava collapsibility index is measured from multiple previously reported standard locations. This data will also seek to determine the best location to measure the inferior vena cava using point-of-care ultrasound among the locations currently reported in literature.
