Michael Geelhoed, D.P.T., OCS, MTC

Dr. Mike Geelhoed is a member of the inaugural Master of Physical Therapy graduating class of UT Health San Antonio in 1998.

Since graduation, Mike has remained living and working in San Antonio. He worked as a staff PT in a sports medicine and rehabilitation facility from 1998-2001, then as clinic director for an outpatient orthopaedic and industrial medicine clinic from 2001-2003, and as clinical coordinator for eight outpatient PT locations in 2002-2004.

He taught Orthopaedics as an adjunct professor in 2003, and accepted a full-time faculty appointment at UT Health San Antonio in January 2004. Currently, he teaches Professional Issues I and II and Movement Science I to the first year students, and Professional Issues III and assists with Musculoskeletal I and Musculoskeletal II to the second-year students. He assumed the role of Director of Clinical Education in January 2007, and is now responsible for all aspects of the students clinical education, including the third year students' four clinical rotations and related coursework.

Mike is the chair of the Alumni and Recruitment Committees of the PT Department. He is currently a member of 11 committees at the department, school and university level. Mike serves as the president of the Texas Physical Therapy Association.

He continues to practice clinically in outpatient orthopedic facilities, and is the primary faculty supervisor for the student-run PT free clinics at Haven for Hope and Alpha Home. Mike received his Certification in Manual Therapy (MTC) from the University of St. Augustine in 2002 and his Board Certification in Orthopedic Physical Therapy (OCS) from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in 2003. He completed his Doctorate of Physical Therapy through the University of St. Augustine in December 2004.

Mike's research interests include reliability and validity of surface palpation of spinal landmarks, the frequency of pathology found on diagnostic imaging of asymptomatic individuals, and improving the critical thinking skills of PT students. He has published several articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals, and presented to local, state, national, and international audiences.
