Sean E. Garcia, MD, FHM
Professor/Clinical
Dr. Sean Garcia is a published, board-certified Hospitalist who joined UT Health San Antonio as an Assistant Professor/Clinical in July 2003, rising to the rank of Associate Professor/Clinical in 2010 and later to Professor/Clinical in 2017. Dr. Garcia earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Pathology (graduating Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Arizona in 1994 before going on to earn his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, AZ in 1999. He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio in 2002 (serving as Chief Resident from 2002 to 2003). Dr. Garcia's area of focus is Hospital Medicine and he has been engaged in medical student and resident education since joining UT Health and he has made significant contributions to preclinical education as a course director for MS1 and MS2 courses beginning in 2009. He was a Course Director for Introduction to Clinical Sciences from 2009 to 2013 and he was also responsible for developing the current preclinical curriculum and is currently the Module Co-Director for Hematology and Respiratory Modules for MS1s and was previous Module Co-Director for Digestive Health and Nutrition for the MS2s.
Dr. Garcia's commitment to medical education has been recognized with the receipt of many medical student, residency, and program teaching awards including the prestigious "Presidential Teaching Excellence Award" (2017), the highest honor bestowed by UT Health San Antonio. He has also been inducted into UT Health's Academy of Master Teachers and he maintains an interest in interprofessional education as a member of UT Health's LINC. Dr. Garcia is a member of several professional organizations including the American College of Physician's Texas Chapter, the Academic Alliance of Internal Medicine, and the Society of Hospital Medicine.
