Melissa J Frei-Jones, M.D., M.S.C.I

Dr. Frei-Jones joined the Department of Pediatrics after completing her Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship in 2008.   She practices as a primary hematologist specialzing in red blood cell disorders and vascular anomalies.  She serves as the Medical Director of the South Texas Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Program and the Comprehensive Vascular Anomaly Program and is active in undergraduate medical education in the Hematology Module in the MS1 curriculum. She had been the Fellowship Program Director for the Division of Hematology-Oncology since 2012.  On a state level, she serves as the Chair of the Texas Department of Health Newborn Screening Advisory Committee and as a member of the Sickle Cell Task Force. Nationally, she is the Vice-Chair of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Education Committee and is a member of the American Board of Pediatrics, Subboard of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology as item writer for the initial certifying exam and MOC.
