Dr. Peter DeSocio serves as Executive Vice Chair and Professor–Clinical in the Department of Anesthesiology at UT Health San Antonio and as Medical Director of the Multispecialty Research Hospital. He brings over two decades of leadership experience in clinical anesthesiology, simulation-based education, healthcare management, and professional society service.
Dr. DeSocio earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his anesthesiology residency training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following residency, he served at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research and Burn Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, providing advanced anesthetic and trauma care to wounded servicemembers.
Transitioning to civilian academic medicine, Dr. DeSocio joined The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in 2010. During his tenure, he rose to the rank of Professor–Clinical and held several key leadership roles, including Director of Simulation Education for the Department of Anesthesiology and Director of Anesthesia Services at University Hospital East (OSU East Hospital). In these roles, he led initiatives to enhance patient safety, develop advanced clinical training programs, and improve anesthesia service operations.
At OSU, Dr. DeSocio was instrumental in developing the first American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA)-endorsed Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) simulation program in Ohio, an initiative that strengthened the institution’s reputation in medical education and continuing professional development.
Dr. DeSocio’s academic credentials include an Master of Business Administration (MBA) from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business, a Master of Finance (MFin) from The Pennsylvania State University, and a Master of Health Administration (MHA) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His formal training in healthcare delivery, finance, and management has reinforced his approach to clinical operations leadership, quality improvement, and system innovation.
He is a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA) and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), reflecting a strong commitment to excellence in both clinical anesthesiology and healthcare administration.
Nationally, Dr. DeSocio has served in numerous leadership capacities within the ASA, including as a founding member of the FASA designation program, the Component Society Recognition and Rewards Program, and the ASA Trauma Cadaver Workshop faculty. He has also contributed to physician mentorship and wellness initiatives as part of the ASA’s Membership Committee.
His academic and clinical interests focus on trauma anesthesiology, simulation-based medical education, physician leadership development, and military medicine. His scholarly contributions include peer-reviewed publications, invited book chapters, and national and international speaking engagements.

Highlights
During my anesthesiology residency and continuation as a junior faculty physician anesthesiologist and Maj in the Army, I had the distinct honor of providing acute pain and regional anesthesia care to combat-injured U.S. military service members in from their brief stop in Launstul Army Medical Center, Germany; to medical flights to the United States Army Medical Centers, an experience that reinforced my dedication to service, excellence, and innovation in clinical care.
At The Ohio State University, I have pursued a career focused on advancing anesthesiology education, leadership, and physician professional development on a national scale.
As a Professor on the Clinical Excellence Track, I have contributed to the expansion of simulation-based training, curriculum innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. My work with the American Society of Anesthesiologists has emphasized mentorship, physician wellness, and strengthening component society programs to drive continuous professional growth within the specialty. I maintain an active scholarly portfolio with numerous peer-reviewed publications, invited chapters, and national presentations, while continuing to mentor early-career physicians and advocate for anesthesiology advancement across academic and clinical arenas.
Rooted in military service and academic leadership, my career reflects a sustained commitment to improving patient care, enhancing physician education, and shaping the future of the profession.
