  • Research & Grants

Dr. Chun's research areas are dental tissues, understanding pathways of diseases affecting them and developing precise dental therapies. The focus is the basement membrane protein ameloblastin. Ameloblastin is critical for enamel formation and belongs to the secreted calcium-binding phosphoproteins. As the hardest tissue of the body, enamel is a unique tissue and its formation by ameloblasts is accomplished by a transitioning through multiple stages. The duration of enamel formation from the initiation to final maturation is about 4 years. Diseases affecting enamel and surrounding structures include amelogenesis imperfecta, molar-incisor hypomineralization and periodontal disease.

    Grants

    • K08 - Role of ameloblastin for ameloblasts and enamel formation
    • R21 - Ameloblastin concentration on enamel formation
