Rogie Royce Z Carandang, PhD, MPH, MSc, RPh

Assistant Professor

Dr. Rogie Royce Carandang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society at the University of Texas School of Public Health San Antonio. He is a pharmacist by training and a health services researcher and social epidemiologist with expertise in life course research. His interdisciplinary background spans global health, gerontology, maternal and child health, and implementation science. Dr. Carandang earned his PhD in Health Sciences (Global Health and Gerontology) from the University of Tokyo, where he also served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community and Global Health. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in maternal and child health at the University of Connecticut Health Center and holds master’s degrees in Public Health and Aquatic Natural Products Chemistry.

Dr. Carandang’s research focuses on developing evidence-based interventions to advance health equity, particularly among underserved populations. He employs advanced statistical analysis, qualitative inquiry, and mixed methods to address complex public health challenges through community-engaged and interdisciplinary approaches. He has led and collaborated on research projects in the Philippines, Japan, Uganda, and the United States. His contributions to the field include several innovative programs, such as Expect With Me, a group prenatal care model aimed at improving perinatal outcomes; the MCH Handbook, including its adaptation into a mobile health application for Russian-speaking communities; and Obstetric Life Support (OBLS), a validated simulation curriculum that trains prehospital and hospital-based providers to prevent, recognize, and manage maternal medical emergencies. These innovations not only improve clinical care but also address health disparities, fostering better outcomes for mothers and children globally.

In addition to his work in maternal and child health, Dr. Carandang has conducted research involving Community Health Workers, focusing on the multi-level social determinants that influence their well-being. He has also contributed to studies in disability research, sexual and gender minority health, and pharmacy practice. Notably, he supported the development of YourRx and PrescripLine, both of which are telepharmacy mobile interventions aimed at improving medication access and adherence. His research has been funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and several private nonprofit foundations.

Dr. Carandang is committed to mentoring future public health leaders and teaches courses in global health, implementation science, and research methodology.
