Joseph B Cantey, M.D.,MPH
Professor
Subspecialties: Neonatology Pediatric Infectious Diseases
Dr. Cantey is an Professor of Pediatrics. Dr. Cantey completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia and received his MD at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. He then completed his pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Cantey completed two fellowships at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX.
Dr. Cantey is heavily involved in clinical research and has published more than 70 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. He has also authored 4 textbooks on neonatal infections and serves on the editorial board of the American Academy of Pediatrics‘ Nelson‘s Pediatric Antimicrobial therapy as well as chapter author for the Red Book. Dr. Cantey‘s particular areas of interest include antimicrobial stewardship and responsible prescribing in the NICU and newborn nursery setting; he published the first prospective antimicrobial stewardship study in the NICU and has become a leading expert on nursery stewardship.
Dr. Cantey is focused on both improving the delivery of antimicrobial stewardship to infants born in low-resource settings as well as expanding our knowledge of the adverse impact antibiotics have on the normal development of term and preterm infants. Other areas of interest include infection control and prevention in the nursery as well as the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and longitudinal follow-up of congenital and perinatal infections, particularly herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, and syphilis.

Grant Detail: Unnecessary antibiotic exposure in newborns is common and has been associated with a variety of short- and long-term adverse outcomes. Antibiotic stewardship programs can safely and effectively reduce antibiotic exposure in the nursery setting, but most nurseries in rural or medically underserved areas lack the local expertise and support for nursery stewardship. Our study will test the widespread dissemination and implementation of a telehealth antibiotic stewardship program for rural nurseries that has been shown to be feasible, safe and effective.
