Research & Grants
Grants
Submitted and Not Funded or Unfunded Research/Projects:
- 2023 – 2025 Funder: IIMS/CTSA CTS. Title: Applying Socio-ecological Model as a Framework to Promote the Inclusion of Systemically Underrepresented Populations in Clinical Translational Science: A Process Evaluation.Grant Detail: The proposed study is a process evaluation using longitudinal, mixed methods, conducted within the context of an ongoing RCT designed to evaluate length of NICU stay and clinical outcomes among POE infants receiving an EHM diet (NCT04508348). Role: Co-PI (McGlothen-Bell/Brownell) Status: Not Funded
- 2021-2023, Funder: University of Texas Systems Rising STARs Award. Title: Child and Family Laboratory Grant Detail: The new Child and Family laboratory, housed within the School of Nursing (please see Facilities page), will offer an excellent environment in which to combine studies of longitudinal epidemiologic data with analyses of biospecimens (serum, blood, saliva, human milk, cord blood, vaginal swabs, and stool samples). The proposed research program will inform novel strategies to improve maternal and infant health outcomes. Such advancements are only possible with access to space, equipment, and supplies to build the proposed infrastructure for research collaborations.
- 2021 – 2026, Funder: R01 1R01HD106354-01 - Title: A Randomized Controlled Trial to Examine the Use of an Exclusive Human Milk Diet among Infants at Risk for Developing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Grant Detail: This proposal addresses a gap identified by the NIH Opioid Use and Pregnancy Joint Workshop and challenges the current clinical paradigms. Accordingly, there is an essential clinical need to explore the benefits of non-pharmacological techniques for newborns with prenatal opioid exposure. We expect that an exclusive human milk diet, comprised of mother's own milk and/or donor human milk, could reduce in-hospital length of stay and improve short-and long-term clinical outcomes among this vulnerable population. Role: PI. Status: Not Scored
- 2021-2023, Funder: R211 R21 DE031071-01 -Title: Oral Transmission and Diagnosis of COVID-19 in Saliva. Grant Details: This research will establish an in vitro model of oral COVID-19 infection and identify factors that contribute to viral infection such as expression of host receptors for COVID-19 binding, production of cytokines associated with COVID-19 infection, and increased susceptibility to COVID-19 infection based on H-antigen secretor status. The detection of COVID-19 viral RNAs, antigens, and antibodies in saliva will also be pursued with the aim of developing a saliva-based diagnostic test for assessing viral infection status. Our studies have the potential to create tools for testing anti-COVID-19 strategies/therapies, identifying COVID-19 vulnerable persons, and increasing the use of saliva-based COVID-19 testing. PI: Yeh. Role: Co-Investigator. Status: Not Scored
- 2022 – 2027, Funder: 1R01HD103040-01/01A - Title: Mechanism of Neurodevelopment in Prenatally Opioid Exposed Infants. Grant Detail: The purpose of this research is to examine differences in neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants with prenatal opioid exposure as compared to infants without prenatal opioid exposure. Co-PIs: Cleveland/McGrath. Role: Co-Investigator. Status: Scored (56, 40%)
- 2020 – 2025, Funder: R01 PAS-18-030 - Title: Improving Quality of Care and Quality of Life for Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias at the End of Life. PI: White, Role: Co-Investigator. Status: Not scored
- 2020 – 2025, Funder: R01 1HD101865-01 - Title: Modulating NAS related Early Life Stress for At-Risk Infants with Strategies to Increase Parent Engagement. Grant Detail: The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between parent engagement and skin-to-skin care for mothers and infants at risk for Neonatal Abstinence syndrome. Co-PIs: Cleveland/ McGrath. Role: Co- Investigator. Status: Not scored
- 2019, Funder: R21 HD100839-01 - Title: Nutrient and Bioactive Composition of Donor Human Milk in the United States. The purpose of this study is to fill a fundamental knowledge gap by describing the distribution of a wide range of key nutritive factors in DHM and their relationship with milk banking practices in order to improve DHM nutritional interventions for the vulnerable preterm population. Grant Detail: This grant, while scored was not resubmitted given that samples identified during the review process were not available to sufficiently complete this study. Co-PIs: Brownell/Perrin. Role: Co-PI. Status: Scored (43)
- 2019, Funder: R21 - Title: Strengthening Causal Inferences from Observational Data Using Repeated-Measures Ecological Modeling. Grant Detail: New methods for drawing high-quality inferences from observational data are essential to help guide clinical management when randomized controlled trials are problematic. We pioneered an innovative, unexplored analytical approach with the potential to strengthen causal inferences from multicenter observational data. We proposed to examine the validity of this approach, assess the consistency of its results in different cohorts, and assess the magnitude and sources of systematic error in its results. PI: Hagadorn. Role: Co-Investigator. Status: Not scored
Completed Research/Projects:
- 2018 – 2020, Title: Texas Targeted Opioid Response (TTOR). The purpose of this SAMHSA-funded, Opioid Emergency Response Pilot is to develop, implement, and analyze a program aimed at decreasing overdose mortality and increasing recovery initiation by connecting individuals identified as being at high risk for overdose with induction and engagement into Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), community paramedicine support, and recovery support services. Further, through this TTOR funding, we have become the primary distributors of the overdose reversal medication (Narcan) and providers of overdose prevention education for the state of Texas. PI: Cleveland, Role: Consultant.
- 2018 - 2019 Funder: Esposito Fund and Stevenson Match Fund for Human Milk Research, Connecticut Children’s. Title: Synergistic Relationship between maternal/infant fucosyltransferase 2 genotype and the clinical course of necrotizing enterocolitis, growth, organ development and intestinal gut colonization. Role: Principal Investigator. Grant Detail: Esposito Fund and Stevenson Match Fund for Human Milk Research, Synergistic Relationship between maternal/infant fucosyltransferase 2 genotype and the clinical course of necrotizing enterocolitis, growth, organ development and intestinal gut colonization. Role: PI; Sponsor: Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Purpose: Design and implement a collaborative multi-faceted approach to evaluate the interaction between maternal/infant secretor status and how this synergistic relationship is modified by the protective components of human milk. These funds support initiative related to the biochemical analyses of human milk and maternal/infant saliva. *Transitioned to Co-I after leaving Connecticut Children’s in 2019.
- 2013 - 2019 Funder: Connecticut Human Milk Research Center. Title: Faculty Resources Grant. Role: Principal Investigator. Grant Detail: Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. The primary research objective is to further understand the relationship between human milk intake in premature newborns and their growth, development and health status. These funds are renewed annually and support person time at 100% for the PI and 100% for a Research Associate (since 2015).
