Juan Berner, MD
Assistant Professor
Dr. Juan Berner is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UT Health San Antonio. He attended medical school at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and completed his Plastic Surgery residency in England, receiving specialist certification by the Royal College of Surgeons and the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. Dr. Berner undertook two prestigious microsurgical fellowships in Newcastle-upon Tyne and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. He worked as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in the United Kingdom for over two years following completion of his training before relocating to San Antonio. He specialises in using microsurgical techniques for reconstructing patients undergoing cancer treatment or who have suffered from major trauma.
Dr. Berner is an academically active clinician. In 2019 he was awarded a Master of Science by the University of Oxford, and he is currently working towards obtaining a PhD in the same institution. His research interest include microsurgical innovations, human factors and patient safety, and the impact of clinical guidelines in improving care of patients sustaining open fractures. Dr. Juan Berner has accomplished over 90 peered-reviewed publications in academic journals and has been recipient of multiple awards and invited lectures for his contributions to the field.
His clinical interests include complex head and neck, breast and extremity reconstruction for patients undergoing cancer treatment or who have suffered major trauma. He also participates in the multidisciplinary care of patients requiring general reconstructive procedures, along with offering cosmetic surgery as part of his clinical practice.
