Juan Berner, MD

Dr. Juan Berner is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UT Health San Antonio. He attended medical school at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and completed his Plastic Surgery residency in England, receiving specialist certification by the Royal College of Surgeons and the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. Dr. Berner undertook two prestigious microsurgical fellowships, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and London, with an emphasis on comprehensive oncological reconstruction. Following completion of his training he worked as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in the United Kingdom for over two years before relocating his practice to San Antonio.

Dr. Berner has been internationally recognized for his experience in microsurgical reconstruction, a refined technique that allows using the patient’s own tissue to achieve the best possible result following cancer surgery. Besides his ample experience in head and neck and sarcoma surgery, he also participates in the care of patients seeking a breast reconstruction.  He is able to offer a variety of alternatives to suit each patient needs, including using tissue from the abdomen (DIEP flap) and thighs (PAP flap), to provide a pleasant and long-lasting breast reconstruction.

Dr. Berner is an academically active clinician. He has been awarded a Master of Science in Surgical Science and a Doctorate in Philosophy, both by the renowned University of Oxford. He has published extensively in oncological reconstruction, promoting innovation in sarcoma, head and neck and breast cancer treatment. He has accomplished over 100 peered-reviewed publications in academic journals and has been recipient of multiple awards and invited lectures for his contributions to the field.
