Tracey E. Barnett, Ph.D.

Associate Professor
With over 20 years of experience in public health, Dr. Barnett has made significant contributions to the field. Dr Barnett is a social epidemiologist with a PhD in Sociology, concentrations in medical and applied sociology, as well as a Master of Arts in Sociology. Before joining UT School of Public Health San Antonio, Dr. Barnett held positions as an assistant professor in the Department of Behavioral Science and Community Health and associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Florida. Dr. Barnett's most recent academic appointments are to the University of North Texas Health Science Center’s School of Public Health, where she served as both associate dean for academic affairs and associate professor and chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology.
Dr. Barnett’s research portfolio focuses primarily on tobacco use among youth and adult populations. She works in the area of prevention for youth, staying current on the latest trends that are introducing them to tobacco and nicotine. For adults, she works in cessation, particularly within healthcare settings. Dr. Barnett broadly researches health risks and resilience across the life course, utilizing both content knowledge as well as methodological and analytical skills to address health topics. She is currently co-investigator on a project to improve educational guidelines in substance use disorders and developmental disabilities.
Dr Barnett’s teaching experience includes courses in adolescent health, aging and chronic diseases, learning and applying social and behavioral theories, and methodological courses. She has taught in MPH and PhD programs.
