Shweta Bansal, MD, MBBS, FASN
Professor of Medicine
“A born Nephrologist” or “her passion for nephrology is contagious”, these are the statements I am identified with and truly, that is who I am, a passionate, hard-working, and life-loving nephrologist, who strongly believes in academic medicine and its each domain - patient care, education, and research. I believe that everyone is given the life with a purpose, and I am privileged to have my current job that has allowed me to have a meaningful impact on the lives of my patients through clinical care and research activities, and the lives of medical students, residents and fellows through teaching.
Revitalization of peritoneal dialysis program and promotion of this under-utilized modality, organization of Annual Cardiorenal Connections CME meeting, establishment of the UTHSA nephrology fellowship as a competitive program in the nation via innovative cardiorenal track and night float system are the highlights of my career. Research activities allow me to quench the thirst for new knowledge and the clinical study “high-dose aldosterone antagonist for decompensated heart failure’ published in Annals of Internal Medicine in 2016 is my pride. The most satisfaction I get is from explaining and teaching renal physiology and disorders to the students or patients and seeing their eyes twinkle with the understanding.

The study objective is to evaluate the effect of atrasentan compared with placebo on time to doubling of serum creatinine or the onset of end stage renal disease (ESRD) in subjects with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy who are treated with the maximum tolerated labeled daily dose (MTLDD) of a Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS) inhibitor. In addition, the study will assess the effects of atrasentan compared with placebo on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, urine albumin excretion, changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), as well as on the impact on quality of life in subjects with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy.
